Air fryer bang bang shrimp is an incredibly popular and scrumptious seafood dish that you can make in the comfort of your own home. This healthy, easy-to-prepare, and flavor-packed recipe is perfect for those who love a crispy and delicious meal with a kick. The air fryer method makes this dish lighter and healthier than traditional deep-frying, while still delivering the perfect crunch. Let’s dive into the world of air fryer bang bang shrimp and explore how to create this delectable appetizer or main course.

  1. Gather Your Ingredients: To create a mouthwatering air fryer bang bang shrimp dish, you’ll need the following ingredients:
  • Large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • All-purpose flour
  • Corn Starch
  • Large eggs, beaten
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooking spray

For the bang bang sauce:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Thai chili sauce
  • Sriracha
  1. Prepare the Shrimp: First, pat your shrimp dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Season the shrimp with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, ensuring an even coating. Next, set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with beaten eggs, and one with flour and cornstarch.
  2. Bread the Shrimp: Dip each shrimp into the beaten egg, allowing any extra egg to drip off. Then coat the shrimp in the flour and cornstarch mixture, pressing gently to make sure the mixture adheres evenly. Repeat this process for all the shrimp and set them aside on a plate.
  3. Preheat Your Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes. This step is crucial to achieving crispy and evenly cooked shrimp.
  4. Arrange the Shrimp in the Air Fryer: Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent the shrimp from sticking. Place the breaded shrimp in a single layer in the basket, making sure they are not touching each other. You may need to cook the shrimp in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  5. Cook the Shrimp: Spray the top of the shrimp with a light coat of cooking spray. This will help achieve a golden-brown color and crispy texture. Cook the shrimp at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking time, until they are golden brown and fully cooked.
  6. Prepare the Bang Bang Sauce: While the shrimp are cooking, prepare the bang bang sauce by whisking together the Mayonnaise, Thai chili sauce, and Sriracha in a small bowl. Adjust the spiciness and sweetness levels to your personal preference by adding more sriracha, if desired. Set the sauce aside until the shrimp are ready.
  7. Coat the Shrimp with the Sauce: Once the shrimp are cooked, remove them from the air fryer and place them in a large mixing bowl. Pour the prepared bang bang sauce over the shrimp and gently toss until they are evenly coated with the sauce.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Transfer the coated shrimp to a serving platter or individual plates. Garnish with thinly sliced green onions or chopped cilantro for an extra pop of color and flavor. You can also serve the shrimp over a bed of lettuce or with steamed rice and a side of steamed or stir-fried vegetables for a complete and satisfying meal.

Tips for making Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp!

  • Preheat your air fryer: One of the keys to getting perfectly crispy shrimp is to make sure your air fryer is preheated before you start cooking. This will ensure that the shrimp cook evenly and that the coating gets nice and crunchy.
  • Use Cornstarch: For the perfect crunchy coating on your shrimp, try using cornstarch instead of regular all-purpose flour. I’ve coated shrimp in all kinds of ways. In the recipe, I did a combination of cornstarch and flour, which will give your shrimp a lighter, crispier texture.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket: To make sure your shrimp cook evenly, it’s important not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook your shrimp in batches if necessary, giving them plenty of space to cook and crisp up.
  • Keep an eye on the cooking time: Shrimp cook quickly, so it’s important to keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t overcook and become tough. Cook them for 5-6 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they’re golden brown and cooked through.
  • Serve with a delicious sauce: The “bang bang” in this recipe comes from the spicy and creamy sauce that’s drizzled over the shrimp. Whip up a batch of the sauce and serve it alongside the shrimp for an extra burst of flavor.

By following these tips, you’re sure to create a batch of air fryer bang bang shrimp that’s crispy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious!
